Kayak hull shape, length and width
- Length: longer kayaks track straighter and glide faster; shorter ones turn more easily.
- Width: wider kayaks feel steadier at rest (primary stability); narrower ones are faster.
- Hull shape and rocker: a flat bottom gives strong primary stability on calm water; more rounded or V-shaped hulls give secondary stability when leaned, which helps in waves; more rocker (upturned ends) turns more easily but tracks less.
